Check out these highlights from the first half of the 2012 Los Angeles Nike Sparq Football Camp at Cerritos College in Southern California.

The camp featured Top Southern California football recruits, in addition to players from Nevada, Arizona and beyond. Along with top offensive lineman recruit Emerald Faletuipapai of Gardena Serra, there were a number of big time prospects including Concord De La Salle linebacker Michael Hutchings, Upland defensive end Joe Mathis, Mission Viejo safety Max Redfield and Rancho Cucamonga safety Tahaan Goodman.

A few weeks ago, CLA readers got their first look at Gardena Serra colossal offensive lineman Emerald Faletuipapai and his plans to dominate the competition for the Cavaliers this upcoming season.

The next step in Faletuipapai’s preparation will take place at the Los Angeles Nike Football Training Camp at Cerritos College on Sunday.

The road trip to the state capitol proved worthwhile for Mater Dei High School as the boys and girls basketball teams took home the California State title. For California’s all-time winning head coach Gary Mcknight, it marked a record ninth state crown.

Tee Shepard is one of the top defensive back recruits in the country. Shepard enrolled early at Notre Dame and was expected to make an immediate impact in the Irish secondary next season. That all changed last week when Shepard left the program and returned home to Fresno.

It is unclear what actually led to Shepard’s departure at this time, although health concerns appear to be the primary factor. Shepard’s departure leaves the Irish secondary pretty thin.

Four teams have survived the madness and booked a trip to New Orleans for the 2012 NCAA Final Four. The first national semifinal will feature an in-state clash between bitter rivals Kentucky and Louisville. The nightcap will feature the Ohio State Buckeyes against the Kansas Jayhawks.

NCAA Tournament 2012 March Madness.  Elite Eight round recap

Four teams booked trips to the Elite Eight Thursday night as March Madness resumed with Sweet Sixteen action. Tonight’s games featured matchups from the East and West Regions.

The first game on the slate featured top seed Syracuse and the feisty four seed Wisconsin Badgers. The game was hotly contested throughout and came down to the wire. Syracuse held on to win 64-63 after Badgers guard Jordan Taylor’s long jumper fell short in the waning moments. The Orange advance to the East Regional Final on Saturday.

NCAA Tournament 2012 March Madness.  Sweet Sixteen round recap

It’s the first day of Spring and the UCLA football team is gearing up for a big season under new head coach Jim Mora. The Bruins officially open spring practice on April 3rd at Spaulding Field. Practices are open to the public and will provide the Bruin faithful with their initial glimpse at the 2012 UCLA Bruins football team.

The most anticipated competition will take place at quarterback. The Bruins return veterans Kevin Prince and Richard Brehaut and supremely talented redshirt freshman Brett Hundley.

Friday’s tournament action was highlighted by the shocking upsets of number two seeds Duke and Missouri at the hands of Lehigh and Norfolk State respectively. The last 15 seed to earn a victory was Hampton over Iowa State in 2001.

Watch highlights from the 2012 CIF State Basketball Playoffs. Mater Dei led over Bullard (Fresno) 42-34 at halftime. Xavier Johnson of Mater Dei dominated the inside during the first two quarters and helped his team maintain a the lead throughout the second half to give the Monarchs a birth in the CIF State Championship game at Arco Arena 3/24 vs. Sheldon (Sacramento).
