Loyola and Santa Monica faced off for the third time this season for a right to advance to Sacramento for the CIF Division I State Championship game.
Loyola won both earlier meetings in close contests. However, Santa Monica came out strong in the opening quarter with suffocating defense and fast break buckets. The Vikings led 11-5 heading to the second quarter.
Earlier this HS basketball season, Marcus LoVett Jr. went absolutely nuts with 48 points against Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks). LoVett is considered one of the top 2015 guard prospects in all of high school basketball and will be a prized recruit for many top NCAA hoop programs in the near future.
In the primetime matchup of the Pioneer Hoops Showdown, the host Providence Pioneers and star sophomore sensation Marcus LoVett Jr. put on quite a show for those in attendance. Providence defeated the Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) Knights 69-61 behind an impressive 48 point performance from LoVett.
The super sophomore scored in a variety of ways, slashing to the hoop, knocking down step back jumpers and making a living at the foul line. Coming off a 47 point outing against Campbell Hall, LoVett was in a good rhythm from the outset and continues to put up ridiculous numbers.
Southern California high school basketball fans are in for a treat Saturday with the Pioneer Hoops Showdown being held at Providence and Bell-Jefferson High Schools in Burbank. The basketball showcase was organized by Providence basketball coach Ernest Baskerville and features several talented ballers from around the state.
There will be six games played at each location. Opening games tip-off at 10am and the nightcaps are expected to tip at 830pm.

La Costa Canyon vs. Lincoln (47-43) - The Mavericks outlasted Lincoln High School to win the Division II CIF Southern Regional Basketball Finals. La Costa advances to Sacramento for the CIF State Basketball Championship on 3/24. Tyrell Robinson (Lincoln HS) led all scorers with 20 points, and finished with 6 rebounds. Erick Magnuson finished with 11 pts and six boards for the Mavericks, while Matt Shrigley had 9 points.
Mater Dei countered with solid performances from senior big man Xavier Johnson, sophomore sensation Stanley Johnson and UNLV bound guard Katin Reinhardt. The terrific trio combined for 64 of the Monarchs 75 points.
After a see-saw first half with numerous lead changes, the Monarchs went to the half clinging to a 30-29 lead.
