The Dorsey High School varsity baseball team can now declare themselves as back-to-back Coliseum League champions.
This time around though, the pennant is all to themselves, as the Dons overcame a rusty start and busted loose with a big 6-run fifth inning en route to a 10-0 shutout of Fremont, which shared the title with them last year, and has yet to notch its first win of the season.
Obed Estrada by and large struggled, serving a torrid 55 balls over 48 strikes and 108 total pitches in five full innings, dealing an even number of walks and strikeouts (7), but dug deep and finished strongly to keep the shutout going as three of the Ks ended innings to eventually earn the win. Obed, earlier, emerged unharmed from a bases-loaded, one out jam with a force-play at home followed by a popup to the catcher (T.Storey).
Tyler Storey started at catcher and then moved to shortstop before pitching the sixth inning for the Dons, where he had three K's in a row after being brushed for a lead-off single in the top-6th.
Ryder John Wall Lee was untouchable in all four trips to bat, hitting 3 of 4 with a double, reach on error, and four runs. Xavier Storey (3-4, 3 RBI, sb) was a huge difference early providing a much needed lift with three consecutive RBI at-bats.
Six of Dorsey's 13 hits were doubles, and Jaquan Willie (2 for 3) had two of those, including a two run dub with two outs (scoring both David Donald and Estrada) which increased the lead to 8-0.
Willie was then doubled in by Alex Maduike to make it 9-0, before Lemuel Parker belched a pop up walkoff hit that shouldered just a tad over the second baseman and fell, allowing Ryder Lee to easily coast home.
Dorsey encounters yet another lengthy pause in action for a full week before seeking an undefeated finish in league next Monday against Locke (also at the Urban Youth Academy). First pitch is set for 6:00pm.
