(Arcadia) - Cleanup hitter Dillon Rezendes came up clutch twice with RBI singles, and Yucaipa, scoring all three of its runs against two outs, also benefited from excellent infield defense and likewise pitching by lefty Taylor Pelissero to etch out a 3-1 win at Giambrone Field in a second round game of the Babe Herman Tournament.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Arcadia had a golden opportunity to strike back when David Dominguez, who dragged the first pitch up the 4-3 path for an infield single, stole second and advanced to third with one out on a wild pitch, before being thwarted when the ensuing pitch went for strike two and a pickoff by catcher Billy Baldwin. Pelissero dealt a strikeout to nix the threat and retire the minimum three, a feat he accomplished in five of the six innings he threw, to convincingly earn the victory.
Baldwin later buzzed a two out RBI double past third and down left field foul land to cash Tom Lerouge, the leadoff man in the lineup who batted 3 for 4 and scored Yucaipa's first two runs.
Arcadia finally got going in the bottom of the seventh against closer Austin Blakemore, and got a great start as Troy Resch led off with a double to the left-center alley. Yucaipa then held the Apaches at bay with a groundout and air-out to first baseman Kyle Roy, before Jason Bunch walked and Brendan Toy singled in Resch to put the tying run on first and go-ahead run at the plate. Blakemore then fanned that batter swinging at strike three to earn the save.
Nick Sergi was tagged for the three runs and loss, but battled on to finish a complete game. Sergi had nine strikeouts.
The Apaches conclude interdivisional pool play in the tournament this ensuing Tuesday afternoon with a homestand versus Granada Hills at 3:30.
