The St. Francis Golden Knights took care of business Thursday night with an impressive 49-20 home victory over the La Mirada Matadores. The star of the game was senior running back Joe Mudie who scored four touchdowns.
St. Francis jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with a short touchdown run by Mudie. La Mirada responded with a touchdown drive of their own that featured several nice catches from talented wide receiver Dallis Todd. Matadores junior quarterback Kevin Dillman linked up with Todd on a sweet pitch and catch to give La Mirada a 7-6 lead late in the first quarter.
St. Francis Wins 49-20: Complete Game Highlights
The Golden Knights regained the lead on a touchdown strike from senior Ty Gangi to sophomore receiver Dylan Crawford. The St. Francis defense forced two fumbles and held the skilled La Mirada offense in check for the most part. Leading 14-7 before the half, Mudie displayed his versatility catching a pass out of the backfield and storming into the end zone for six and a 21-7 halftime advantage.
On the opening kickoff of the second half, Mudie delivered the knockout punch with a blazing kick return for a touchdown that extended the St. Francis lead to 28-7. Shockingly, Mudie does not hold any scholarship offers to this point. Joe Mudie is a great all-around player that certainly has the game to play at the next level.
Sparked by Mudie's kick return, the Golden Knights rode a tidal wave of momentum and added to their lead with Joe's fourth touchdown of the game on a short scamper. A touchdown run by Gangi gave the Golden Knights a commanding 42-7 lead in the third quarter.
Dillman and Todd linked up for another touchdown to cut the deficit but St. Francis held firm and cruised to a 49-20 victory. Next up for 3-0 St. Francis is a non-league home contest against Damien next Friday. Winless La Mirada must shake off the loss and prepare for Suburban League play which begins next week at home against Bellflower.
