The Gardena Serra Cavaliers captured the CIF-SS Western Division Championship with a hard fought 30-28 victory over the Chaminade Eagles at Serra High School Friday night.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead on a long touchdown run by junior Adoree’ Jackson on a fake punt.
Trailing 7-0, Chaminade answered with a touchdown run by standout running back Terrell Newby to tie the game.
Playmaking junior linebacker Dwight Williams gave Serra a 14-7 lead with an impressive interception return for a touchdown.
Not to be outdone, the Chaminade special teams provided their own big play with a punt return for a touchdown from junior Donovan Lee to make it 14-14 at the half.
Serra drew first blood in the second half with a field goal.
Trailing 17-14, Chaminade took the lead for the first time on another long touchdown run by Newby.
Serra responded with a go-ahead touchdown of their own by sophomore Malik Roberson to take a 24-21 lead.
The Cavaliers extended the lead to 30-21 but Chaminade refused to back down scoring a late touchdown to cut the lead to 30-28 with less than a minute to play.
Chaminade recovered the onside kick but it did not go 10 yards and Serra took possession and ran the clock out to secure the title.
Both teams left it all out on the field in what was truly an epic high school football championship game.
