The Crenshaw Cougars defeated the Dorsey Dons 34-14 Friday night at Jackie Robinson Park to notch their seventh victory of the season and seize control of first place in the Coliseum league.
Crenshaw jumped out to a 7-0 lead when junior quarterback Ajene Harris linked up with Dominique Hatfield on an 18-yard touchdown.
Late in the second quarter, Crenshaw extended the lead on an impressive 24-yard pitch and catch from Harris to Max Lyons for a touchdown. Shortly after, Hatfield made another huge play, intercepting Dorsey quarterback Reggie Bell and returning it 33 yards to give Crenshaw a 21-0 halftime advantage.
Needing a spark, Dorsey started the second half with an onside kick. The Dons recovered the ball and marched down the field, culminating in a touchdown run by Bell to cut the deficit to 14.
Leading 21-7 heading into the final quarter, Crenshaw continued to pound the ball and put the game away on Corey Walker’s 22-yard touchdown run.
Both teams played hard but it was Crenshaw that proved superior. The Cougars stalwart defense was led by strong performances from Mossi Johnson and Hatfield. The offense under the direction of Harris continues to be productive. Expect Crenshaw to ride this balanced all-around attack to a deep playoff run.
