On February 24, Tashon Smallwood of Central East (Fresno, CA) was at USC visiting for the Trojans’ Junior Day. On February 24, the 6-foot-1, 280 lbs. defensive tackle gave his verbal commitment to become the fourth member of their 2014 recruiting class.
“I’ve been considering it, but when I got there, it seemed like the right place for me,” said Smallwood when asked what made him want to commit right away.
USC was “not necessarily a dream school,” said Smallwood, “but it had been a favorite.” So, what was the reason for his decision to commit? “Pretty much the coaching staff and their new defensive scheme fits exactly what I’m best at.”

Smallwood is a quick player for his size, and that’s what the USC coaches like about him. “I talked to those two coaches (Coach Ed Orgeron and Coach Clancy Pendergast) the most and they said they liked how quick I am for my size.”
With plenty of time until the 2014 recruiting classes sign their National Letter of Intent, it’s unknown if Smallwood will be taking more visits, but he does know that he is locked in to his decision.
Smallwood also boasts offers from Oklahoma, Miami (Fl.), Boise State and Cal among many others.
