The Gardena Serra Cavaliers defeated the Edison Chargers 27-10 Saturday night at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa to advance to the CIF Division II Championship against Oakdale.
The Chargers, champions of the Southwest Division, jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first half before a 7-yard touchdown pass from Serra junior quarterback Jalen Greene to Gregory Webb cut the deficit to 10-7 at halftime.
The second half belonged to the Cavaliers. Serra stormed down the field on their opening drive, capped off by a short touchdown run by Greene to give the Cavaliers a 14-10 advantage.
The key play in the game came early in the fourth quarter when Serra linebacker MalachI Mageo intercepted Edison quarterback Aleksander Torgersen and returned it 41 yards to the house to give Serra a commanding 24-10 lead.
The Cavaliers speed and athleticism eventually took its toll and paved the way for victory. The CIF Division II State Bowl Game will be played at 4pm Dec 15 at Home Depot Center in Carson.
