The Narbonne Gauchos defeated the Gardena Serra Cavaliers 22-9 in a highly anticipated inter-sectional clash between undefeated teams. The high powered Narbonne offense was for the most part held in check by the stout Serra defense.
Standout senior quarterback Troy Williams and the Gauchos struck first with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jon’tae Robeson. University of Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian was on the sidelines to see his prized recruit in action.
Serra responded with an impressive drive culminating in a 25-yard touchdown catch by Darrell Fuery on a perfect throw from quarterback Jalen Greene. It was the first offensive touchdown Narbonne has allowed this season.
Full Game Highlights
Narbonne marched down the field before halftime to regain the lead 13-7 on a short touchdown run by Tony Gates. Williams connected with receiver AJ Richardson on some big plays through the air to get the Gauchos in scoring position.
The second half was highlighted by some costly turnovers by Serra. Senior linebacker Marquis “Redd” Lomax had two huge interceptions and was all over the field making big plays for the Gauchos.
A great run by Serra running back Marques Rogers was spoiled by a crushing hit by Narbonne defensive back Kwentin Polk which led to a fumble that was snatched up by Keishawn Bierria and returned 54 yards for six.
Washington Huskies Commit Interview - Troy Williams (QB/2013)
Senior Narbonne built a 22-7 lead but Serra continued to fight and was in position to score but fumbled near the goal line. From my vantage point it appeared the ball carrier broke the plain of the end zone before the ball came loose but the referee saw it differently and awarded Narbonne the ball.
A bad snap on a punt attempt led to a safety that cut the margin to 22-9 but there was no time left for Serra to mount a comeback.
Cal Bears Commit Interview - AJ Richardson (WR/2013)
Both teams brought maximum effort tonight. Turnovers were the difference. There is no question that Serra can compete with anyone in the state and should rebound from this defeat. As for Narbonne, they are as good as advertised. The Gauchos will face another worthy opponent next week when they host undefeated Mater Dei.
