As a response to the turmoil surrounding the Watts Riots of 1965, the LA Watts Summer Games were established by the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce. The LAWSG started in 1968, and its current mission is to "build bridges of understanding among high school youth through positive interaction, respect and achievement through spirited competition in athletics, arts and academics."
During the Watts Riots of 1965, before the advent of the internet and mass communications, all eyes and ears of the world descended upon Watts and the surrounding Los Angeles community. As a result of this malay, the LAWSG were born and have "served more than 287,463 student-athletes" since.
Originally, the LAWSG were modeled after the Olympics and aimed to promote athletic talent. This initial focus resulted in former participants such as NFL legend John Elway, NBA Champion Byron Scott and Olympic Gold Medalist Florence Griffith Joyner. Today, the goal of the games is to provide an arena for "youth to achieve common goals, and reach greater heights through sports."
On June 9th, 10th and 16th the LA Watts Summer Games will once again remind the world of what can be accomplished by gathering different cultures, ideas, ethnic backgrounds and communities to achieve a common goal. This year's LA Watts Summer Games look to carry on the traditions of the past, while also celebrating the future of our student-athletes, college graduates and community members.
