At Serra High School (Gardena, CA), Darrell Fuery isn't the most talked about on the football team. In addition, Darrell Fuery is not your prototypical star player. However, Darrell Fuery is a helluva football player and doesn't mind being underrated because he know's the real deal. Oh yeah, and he runs a 10.8 100M and long jumps nearly 24 feet.
Fresno State knows that Fuery is the real deal, and for the 2013 Serra HS recruit, the feeling is mutual. "I went on a visit this weekend and I committed on Sunday at breakfast," he told CLA Sports today.
"My dad is excited. He told me to just commit if I think that's where I can see myself for the next four of five years. My mom said the same thing."
Dorsey High School wide receiver Delvon Hardaway also committed to Fresno State during his trip from Los Angeles over the weekend.
"That was my first time up at the school. I was up there with (Delvon) Hardaway and a couple other dudes. It felt good because we can both go in there and compete, and I won't go in there not knowing anybody," said Fuery.
"I'm glad he committed there too and we're gonna get to work in the summer."
NIKE Sparq Combine Interview
Although Fuery hovered under the radar for much of last year, the recent 2013 Fresno State football commit did find himself in the spotlight on several occasions. I've personally witnessed Darrell Fuery unleash the beast after clutching the ball in the end zone on more than one occasion. It's those moments in the end zone that the calm, quiet Darrell is nowhere to be found.
Darrell Fuery Highlights
The sure-handed Fuery demanded the ball last year for Serra due to his incredible production. He scored a touchdown on a remarkable 1 out of every 3 passes he caught for the Cavaliers in 2012 and averaged nearly 19 yards per catch. The future Bulldogs wideout hauled in 11 TD receptions and was able to shine on a CIF State Championship team that featured 5 players who scored 9 or more touchdowns.
Interview before Fresno State Offer
If you go to a Serra HS football game, the buzz about 2014 recruits Dwight Williams, Adoree' Jackson and Jalen Greene is always in the air. As all great teams need a coach, they also need a leader. Fuery served as a senior leader amongst a young Serra team and receiver corps that included juniors Jordan Lasley and Gregory Webb. "Coach Chuck, my receiver's coach, I called him right when I committed," he told CLA.
"For my receivers next year (Serra), I told them to keep pushing and I'm gonna come back. Maybe they can become Bulldogs too and we end up like SC, have a Serra duo," he said.
Fuery has high hopes about what lies ahead with Fresno State, and with quarterbacks of the past such as David Carr and several other notable NFL players, he has good reason.
"I know they produce good quarterbacks, so I don't have to worry about the QB getting me the ball. The quarterback coming in next year, he's pretty good from what I hear, and I'm working with the best."
CLA congratulates Darrell Fuery and his family on the commitment.
