As CLA expected, the UCLA Bruins and first-year head coach Jim L Mora named former Chandler (AZ) standout quarterback Brett Hundley the starter last week. The expectation is that Hundley’s dual threat ability will flourish in their new spread offense.
The redshirt freshman beat out returning quarterbacks Kevin Prince and Richard Brehaut to claim the starting nod. The insertion of Hundley will surely energize the fan base and provide the Bruins stability under center for the foreseeable future.
At 6-3 223, Hundley clearly has the physical skills to be successful. Combine that with a high football IQ and willingness to improve, and Hundley’s potential is unlimited.
Hundley’s ability to run was clearly a deciding factor in Mora’s decision. At the college level, athletic quarterbacks can turn broken plays into big gains. This added dimension will serve Hundley and the Bruins well this season.
The Bruins open the 2012 season on the road at Rice on Thursday August 30.
With game day just weeks away, Hundley has the right approach.
“Just trying to master my craft and get that much better. I just gotta stay focused and stay humble,” Hundley told reporters.
CLA is looking forward to the first chapter in the Brett Hundley era.
