Diamond Ranch High School's varsity football team is loaded with talent for the upcoming 2012-2013 season. The list of top recruits from Diamond Ranch include a trio of sophomores, with Kammy Delp (DE/2014), Josh Buckholz (DE/2014) and Matt Preston (LB/2014) leading the way.
College Level Athletes caught up with 6'4" 275 upcoming junior Kammy Delp after yesterday's UCLA camp, and he shared his thoughts with us.
"There were about 6, including me. The ones who were there were Poasi Moala, CJ, Sunia Kafovalu, Damien Mama and Viane Talamaivao," Delp said.
The Class of 2014 standout walked away from his experience at UCLA with a better understanding of how NCAA players prepare for practices and games. "For me, personally, (it) was the film session, it helped me learn what I needed to work on since the coaches broke down what I needed to improve," Delp told CLA Sports.
As one of the many student-athletes from Diamond Ranch High School at the PrimeTime Polynesian workouts in Corona, CA, Delp has noticed his recruiting stock rise tremendously. The training and exposure at the PTP sessions have helped provide the soon-to-be junior with more opportunities to gain attention from some of top college football programs in the country.
"The recruiting process has been very good since I've been contacted by my very own coach to attend some of these camps," Delp says. "The coaches want to see me on the field and doing their workouts."
It's obvious that the coaches want to see Delp on the field, along with many other up and coming recruits out of the Inland Empire. Look for the football recruiting scene to reach boiling point in the Inland Empire in the near future. When you consider the fact that UCLA has announced plans to officially open their 2012 football training camp at Cal State San Bernardino (Aug. 4-16), it's apparent that the I.E. is no longer flying under the radar.
In regards to football scholarships, Delp hasn't had any new offers come in recently, however, he says, "I have gotten a lot more attention from USC with Coach James Craig & Oregon State with Coach Joe Seumalo."
Although he has received a great amount of attention as of late, Delp has maintained his attitude of working each day to improve his craft. "This year, the core things I've been working on are my speed, agility, field awareness, and new techniques on offense since I've been moved to fullback and tight end," he told CLA. Delp will most definitely make an impact on the offensive side of the ball in 2012. In addition, you can count on Delp and fellow junior Josh Buckholz to wreak havoc on quarterbacks all season long from their defensive end positions.
Delp is a dedicated student-athlete who is appreciative of the direction his coaches and mentors have provided. "Coach (Roddy) Layton has been pushing me to be prepared in the classroom and always remember that academics is important. He is also helping tremendously by contacting a lot of schools to help me get my exposure out there, just like College Level Athletes, PrimeTime Polynesian, 61 Athletes & Junior Rank," he said.
"The Workouts at PTP have trained me a lot to help me be physically prepared for the next level. Both my Coaches from PTP, and Coach Layton strive to help me reach the next level and to be the best I can be."
Kammy Delp, Viane Talamaivao, Sunia Kafovalu, Matt Preston, Josh Buckholz, Emerald Faletuipapai, Cameron Hunt and Christian Garcia are only a handful of the names of California's top high school football recruits from the Inland Empire that will cut the grass on Saturdays at the next level. Don't sleep on the I.E., we know it gets hot out there.
Here's a bonus video from Kammy's CLA interview at one of the PTP workouts in Corona, CA at Centennial High School. Enjoy.
