William E. Pellum

William E. Pellum, who happens to coach for the varsity football team at Palm Springs High School, also played football for the Indians. Pellum tells stories of his earliest childhood memories being around the football field at Palm Springs High School, which eventually brought him to Washington State and a trip the the 1988 Aloha Bowl. Pellum's determination brought him a step closer when he eventually earned a tryout with the Los Angeles Rams. Detailed in Pellum's autobiography, "Catching Dreams," is his experience from adolescence to adulthood, and a portrait of how essential the impact of the game of football has been to nearly every facet of his life.

Having never met Pellum, nor had a conversation with the 20 year veteran football coach, our first interaction over the telephone was a 45 minute profession of his love for football, the community, and the chance for student-athletes to earn a college degree, along with many lifelong lessons as a result of pursuing their dreams each day.

Pellum not only coaches football for his high school alma mater, but he is heavily involved in the community, as well. After he attended Palm Springs High School, Pellum returned to coach wrestling and football, and has been around the campus for most of his life. "I grew up running around this field, and have been around Palm Springs High School since I was seven years old," said Pellum. "Once the players realize this, they end up really listening to what I have to say." This impact on the field translates into the community, as Pellum works as a recreational director for the City of Palm Springs. During the year, Pellum also makes it a priority utilize his passion for public speaking, and attends several high schools, and offers inspiration and guidance to youth. As an active member of his community Pellum also helps organize local events for Black History Month, including a black tie dinner event that he helps organize and participates in each year.

William E. Pellum remains a shining example for all of those who wish to make a difference and an impact on the lives of others, and with the determination to keep "catching dreams," the number of individuals he inspires will continue to grow for generations. Thank you to all of the William Pellum's that have given their hearts and lives for the betterment of our youth. What an honor it must be to be part of this fraternity called coaching.
