After a long and turbulent recruiting process, former Oaks Christian wide receiver Jordan Payton is firmly ingrained at UCLA and ready to contribute as a freshman. At 6’2 200, Payton has the size, speed and play-making ability to warrant the interest he received. It is top flight recruits like Payton that exemplify the new Jim Mora era in Westwood.
The Bruins need at receiver was an important factor in Payton’s decision to sign. Jordan shared his thoughts with CLA on the driving factors that led him to Westwood.
“The opportunity to play right away, Coach Yarber and Coach Mora telling me how much they believe in me and how close to home it was.“
The proximity to family and friends is always an added bonus. “Nothing feels better. It’s a great feeling that I get to stay home and my whole family can come watch. It’s big because my sister is pregnant and is due soon so that’s big too,” said Payton.
The Bruins boast a talented recruiting class highlighted by stud defensive tackle Ellis McCarthy, the top defensive tackle prospect in the nation. Mora landed a horde of defensive prospects including defensive backs Ishmael Adams (Oaks Christian) and Marcus Rios as well as defensive end Jeremy Castro and linebacker Aaron Porter.
On offense, the addition of Payton and former Chandler High standout Javon Williams to the receiving corps should greatly benefit the passing game. The primary returning receivers are Shaquelle Evans and Ricky Marvray. The opportunity for playing time is there for the taking.
For his part, Payton has no intentions of redshirting this season . “I’m not planning on it…and I don’t think the coaches are either…it’s about how hard I work.”
With hard work and dedication to his craft, Payton should make an impact on the field for the Bruins in 2012.
As far as the complexities of the recruiting process are concerned, Payton’s advice to future recruits is a prudent one.
“You just have to do what’s best for you and you only…and I got caught up in where other people wanted me to go but in the end… I chose where I wanted to go.”
