Long Beach Poly Edges St. John Bosco 61-59 on a Jordan Bell Buzzer Beater

The Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits pulled out a heart-stopping 61-59 victory over the St. John Bosco Braves in front of a packed house at Cerritos College to advance in the CIF Open Division Championships.

With the game tied at 59 and 11 seconds to play, Poly senior Roschon Prince drove into the lane and barreled over a Braves defender. It was a close play but the officials chose to swallow their whistles and the ball bounced right to senior Jordan Bell for the game-winning lay up as time expired.

The game was played at a frenetic pace from the outset. Both teams moved the ball up and down the court resulting in several highlight baskets. Poly led 17-14 after the first quarter.

The Braves went on a nice run to start the second quarter and took a 24-19 advantage leading to a Poly timeout. The Jackrabbits responded with a mini run of there own to close the gap to 28-27 at halftime.

Sophomore Tyler Dorsey led the Braves with 12 first half points while Prince had 13 points to lead Poly.

St. John Bosco stormed out of the locker room blazing, knocking down consecutive long range jumpers and building a 42-31 lead.

True to form, the senior laden Jackrabbits responded with an impressive 11-0 run that culminated with a three-pointer from junior Kameron Murrell to tie the game. Sophomore Ke'jhan Feagin drilled a buzzer beating bomb to give Poly a 47-44 advantage heading to the final quarter.

Both teams brought maximum effort in the fourth, highlighted by several amazing block shots by Jordan Bell. The teams exchanged buckets and were tied at 59 late in the game.

It was a classic game to witness. Both teams balled out and the raucous crowd provided an exciting atmosphere for those in attendance. Bosco football stars Niko Falah, Naijiel Hale, Damien Mama, Shay Fields and Malik Dorton were in the house supporting their school.

In the end, it came down to a chaotic final sequence for Poly to advance on in the CIF Open Division Championships. The Jackrabbits will take on the Mater Dei Monarchs on Tuesday night. Mater Dei defeated El Camino Real 79-54 in their opening round matchup.

Roschon Prince led Poly with 25 points while Isaac Hamilton added 22 points for Bosco.
