John Elway & Tony Gywnn Participated in Past LA Watts Summer Games

The LA Watts Summer Games have a long and storied tradition dating back to 1968. The birth of the Games is one of the most positive outcomes of the Watts riots of 1965. The LA Watts Summer Games provide local athletes an invaluable forum to showcase their talents and reach their potential. Their objective is clear. To build bridges of understanding through respect, fair play and integrity.

Several future Hall of Fame athletes including John Elway and Tony Gywnn have participated in the LA Watts Summer Games in the past. Famous athletes aside, the LA Watts Summer Games have positively impacted countless lives throughout its existence and are determined to spread their constructive message moving forward.

This year’s festivities take place on June 9 and 10 and will feature athletes from all over the state of California. The closing ceremony will take place June 16. The non-profit event will surely be covered by various media outlets.

Competitive events include basketball, soccer, football, volleyball, softball and many more. The number of participants has increased over the years and it is estimated that over 200,000 athletes have competed since its inception.

In 1992, a scholarship program was established to reward youth that work toward the betterment of the community through volunteerism. The emphasis on education and scholastics demonstrates the importance and value of the Watts Games. Communities around the country should seriously consider using the Watts model as an effective approach in improving their communities and better serving local youth.

The success of the Games is dependent on the slew of volunteers and contributors that put in the effort to make a difference in the community and have a positive impact in the lives of the young men and women yearning for opportunity and craving success.

CLA is pleased to partake in this year’s event and looks forward to covering the athletes in every event as they strive for greatness.
