2013 Nike The Opening: Lineman Challenge

Socal OL Recruits Shine

Day Two of The Opening at Nike headquarters in Beaverton began with the Lineman Challenge featuring the best offensive and defensive lineman in the country. The game of football is usually won in the trenches and this year's crop of linemen are loaded with talent.

The most impressive performer on either side of the ball was St. John Bosco (CA) offensive lineman Damien Mama. The big man beasted in 1on1 drills against quality competition.

ESPN's recruiting guru Tom Luginbill put it best, "He was as advertised. In a drill rigged for the defense to win, he was still dominant."

Diamond Ranch's Kammy Delp also excelled in 1on1 drills. Notre Dame commit Quenton Nelson from Red Bank, NJ showed why the Irish were so eager to bring him aboard. The offensive tackle had over 30 offers before choosing Notre Dame.

Other offensive lineman that shined include Cam Robinson, Utah commit Kenyon Frison and Alabama commit Viane Talamaivao.

There was some major talent on the defensive line with the likes of Da'Shawn Hand, Lorenzo Carter, Josh Frazier and Ainuu Taua putting in work.

Defensive end Solomon Thomas from Coppell, TX performed well and has scholarship offers from several big time programs. Recently, Thomas took visits to Notre Dame and Ohio State.

Defensive tackle Garrald McDowell from Covington, LA is a force on the interior and looked sharp in 1on1 drills against quality offensive linemen.

The Lineman Challenge concludes with the championship round Wednesday morning at Ronaldo Fields.
