On a typical Spring Tuesday, as a high school student-athlete, what is your day like?

It’s a typical Spring Tuesday as a high school student-athlete in California and the sun shines bright in the early afternoon now that the clocks have changed.

It’s baseball season. This means time to grab the various left-handed mitts I’ve accumulated over the years from the closet under the stairs of my family’s apartment and get ready to steal some bases. On any given day, that closet was home to shoulder pads, helmets, bats, cleats of all sorts, and whatever else made the journey from home to home over the years.

During the Spring of my senior year, the daily sports routine begins at 2 –o’clock, due to the fact that I have no sixth period since I took summer school since 9th grade to stay ahead.

After fifth period, I hit the baseball diamond with my buddy Jared, who I’ve known since elementary school. It’s our job to water the dirt infield each day before practice, and what some regard as a task, is an irreplaceable opportunity for us to share stories and consume the familiar sights and smells of baseball that transport us back to childhood.

Most days are left to baseball at this time of year, but since it’s also track season, some of my time is spent working on my steps in the long and triple jumps, and getting timing down for the 4x100 meter relay.
